My first project was the new Mobile, Alabama airport, where our scope included building management, fire, and security systems.

My Journey in Construction
From Draftsman to Turnkey OT Provider
I entered the construction industry in 1985 with Johnson Controls as an engineering co-op draftsman after graduating from the University of South Alabama. At that time, the Internet of Things didn’t exist, and even Direct Digital Controls were still competing with pneumatics and electric control systems. My first project was the new Mobile, Alabama airport, where our scope included building management, fire, and security systems.
technology was clunky by today’s standards — slow, limited — but at the time, it felt futuristic. For the first time, owners could see the potential of integrated systems working together instead of in silos. The promise of greater efficiency was there, even if the tools weren’t fully ready.
Over the next three decades, I worked on countless projects where integration was attempted, sometimes successfully, sometimes not. Each effort reinforced the same truth: owners wanted more out of their systems. They wanted sustainability, efficiency, and smarter technology — but without adding more staff or complexity. New challenges emerged too: IT requirements, evolving codes and standards, faster schedules, and higher operational demands on Day One.
Around 2014, during a major project for an aviation client, the lesson became clear. Even when the systems were well-installed, they were still operationally disconnected because they had been delivered through the traditional silos of contracting. That experience confirmed what I first glimpsed back in 1985: integration had to be approached differently.
The questions we kept asking — and hearing from clients — shaped what AOTCS is today:
✓ How much more value could owners unlock if their systems all worked together instead of on separate islands?
✓ What pitfalls could be avoided if IT teams were engaged early in the design process?
✓ How much cost could be saved by planning a long-term technology roadmap during master planning?
✓ Why not have a single partner responsible for the entire Day One operational technology experience?
After 35 years of pursuing answers to these questions, we’ve seen the benefits of a new model: one company delivering everything from concept to Day One, with accountability for design, installation, and integration.
Today, that company is AOTCS. Built on the lessons of decades of work with forward-thinking, sustainability-minded clients, we are proud to lead an organization of incredible people committed to helping owners succeed from the first day of operation — and long after.
